Thank you all who have commented on and appreciated the images representing the 14 Stations of the Cross, now hanging in the office hallway. I have received various questions about them since they were finished and will try to answer them here.
First, I want to publicly thank Kristin Fitzpatrick for her talent and collaboration; without her the images probably would not be hanging now. Also, thanks to Jesse Velazquez for getting them hung nicely and quickly, and to our Clergy and Worship Committee for their support.
Questions
- Did you get these from the Internet?
No, not one bit of them. You will not find these anywhere else in the universe.
- Where did you get the ideas?
On my couch, in our dining room, or staring out the kitchen window with some paper and pencil. This step did take time; often I’d have something down and thought I liked it, only to have something better pop into my head a week or two later.
- What technology did you use?
Strictly old-school: hand, eye, pencil, rulers, scissors, arithmetic, and tape. Once small sketches were drawn, they had to be expanded to our chosen final size, 30 x 20 inches. A grid was drawn over the small sketches, then redrawn in the larger size. This step has to be done accurately or any tiny mistake in the small size image will cause big problems when enlarged.
- How did the finished images get put together?
The drawing was reproduced by hand in the larger size, taped up on my basement wall. Then, using tracing paper, shapes of each color were transferred to art paper, cut out, and arranged to fit together to fill out the drawing. Kristin and I got together maybe once a week at Ascension and worked on this together.
- What was a tough spot?
The backgrounds. I didn’t flesh them out very much on the drawings; I just moved ahead with a vague idea of what it would be. Kristin to the rescue-her ideas greatly improved the scenes she worked on, and those I worked on as well. Also, I’d love to upgrade the frames someday.
- Are you going to have signs that identify and explain each image?
Yes—Now that I have stopped over-analyzing them, they will be completed soon.
- Are they for sale?
Not at this time, but one never knows.
