ADVENT: A DEEP BREATH OF HOPE
Every year when Advent arrives, something in my heart wakes up. This is, without question, my favorite season of the Christian year. The whole church shifts into this rich, beautiful blue color that feels like the sky. That color alone preaches a sermon: calm down, breathe, pay attention… something holy is coming.
Advent is our season of preparing, not rushing, not stressing, but preparing with intention. From the earliest centuries of the Church, these four weeks were set apart as a time to refocus our spirit. Back then it even felt a little like a mini-Lent: prayer, reflection, and re-centering. Over time, Advent became the gentle doorway that leads us into Christmas, teaching us how to long for God again.
But every year, I notice how easy it is to let Advent disappear under the weight of early Christmas. The lights, the shopping, the music, the rushing, all of it starts way before December, and if we are not careful, we can lose the quiet gift of this season. So, I want to encourage you: let Advent be Advent. Give yourself permission to slow down. Don’t jump too quickly to the celebration. Let these four weeks do their work in your heart. Christmas will come with all its joy, but Advent helps us arrive ready.
Underneath the traditions, candles, prayers, and hymns, Advent is really about one truth that I love: God comes to us. Not just in Bethlehem many years ago. Not just at the end of time when all things will be made new. But right now, in our routines, our work, our worries, our families, in the quiet corners of our days. Advent reminds us that God is always on the way, always drawing near.
Maybe that’s why this season speaks so deeply to me. Advent feels like the whole Church is taking a deep breath together. It feels like clearing space in our busy lives so that we can truly welcome Someone who matters. These weeks invite us to prepare not just our homes for Christmas, but our hearts for Christ.
So, as we gather in our blue sanctuary, as we light the candles of hope, peace, joy, and love, I invite you into that holy preparation. Make room. Make room for the hope that feels fragile this year. Make room for the peace you have been longing for. Make room for God’s quiet work inside you. And above all, make room for Jesus, for His presence, His healing, His joy, coming once again into our lives.
May this Advent season fill you with expectation, tenderness, and that beautiful sense of “something important is about to happen.”
With love,
Padre Javier
